More than just a daddy

My wife and I recently found out that we are pregnant. This is so exciting. We have not been "trying" very long, so we were just getting over the hype of not using some form of birth control, before we found out. Over the course of the past week I have made some realizations about our future, and guess I will list them here.

1. Someday soon, I am going to have a little one running around calling me daddy. I just can't imagine that. I am excited for it, but what will he or she look like?

2. We are going to have a living, breathing, thing in the house that needs us. To date we have only ever owned a fish, may he rest in peace. This will be a completely new venture.

3. This comes at a great time. In a year where we have lost my wife's father, her cat, her dog and my grandmother, this is some really great news that we can celebrate in 2009. We had already been clamoring for it to end.

4. Everyone is so excited. People I haven't seen in years are excited for us. It is amazing how people smile when you give them the news.

5. We're going to be grandparents one day (perhaps)...that's just a little weird to think about.

6. I used a knock, knock joke to tell someone we were pregnant.

7. It could be twins. They run in the family.

I don't know how to describe the feeling. I've always thought I would be a father. There was a time that my wife and I weren't sure we would have kids and I had made peace with that. Now we are and the excitement must be mingled with a mild dose of reality and terror because I feel like I am getting onto a really cool roller coaster.

I have no fear of the future. I know with all certainty that God is in control. He has brought us to this point and He is faithful. He will help us through every day of parenthood. My greatest hope as a father is that my children will be headlong in love with the Lord our God, that they will seek after Him and find Him, and that they will bring many more to know Christ.
